The Women's* and Equal Opportunity Officers of ASH
The Women's* and Equal Opportunity Officers support the university in coming closer to its claim of gender equality. The central Women's* and Equal Opportunity Officer is a full-time employee and keeps an eye on gender issues throughout the university. She is elected every 4 years by the central Women's* Council and is supported by two deputies. The two departments(Department I: Social Work and Department II: Health, Education & Training) each have a decentralized Women's* and Gender Equality Officer who works to anchor gender equality issues in the departments.
The Women's* and Equal Opportunity Officers and their team work against discrimination and for the empowerment of women*. We advise and support all institutions and committees of the university in matters of gender equality policy, we develop concepts and projects for gender equality, contribute to the anchoring of gender competencies in teaching and university culture, and advise in cases of (sexual) discrimination and violence. Together with other actors, we form the working area Intersectional Practice and Transformation (InPuT).
We work with and for all members of the university: students, employees, teachers. We recognize differences among women*, work with a broad intersectional approach and strive to include complex life realities and power inequalities in our work.
The tasks of the Women* and Equal Opportunity Officers are essentially defined in the Berlin Higher Education Act and formulated in ASH's Equal Opportunity Concept.
Even though the proportion of women* in all member groups of ASH Berlin is now relatively high, there is a need for the sustainable promotion of equal opportunities. Experience shows that the underrepresentation of women* among professors and executives can only be eliminated with targeted strategies. It also shows that barriers remain particularly high for some groups of women*. ASH Berlin also advocates socio-politically for the academicization of the former 'women's professions' in the fields of social work, health and care, education and training (SAGE). The goal is to upgrade the professions with more professional autonomy, higher salaries, higher social status, opportunities for advancement, as well as with specialized research. To achieve this, women* working in the field must be given the opportunity to enter academia.

Gender sensitive language
The gender asterisk (*) after "women" has so far served as a reference to the constructional character of gender. However, this process of visualization, which was intended to represent gender beyond a binary system, also has an exclusionary effect in the formulation chosen here. We continue to use the (*) in the title as a self-designation of the Women's* and Gender Equality Officers and as the Women's* and Gender Equality Office in order to make visible that we are approachable for more people than "just" women.
The full statement of the Women* and Equality Office on this can be found here: The crux with the asterisk
Here are some notes on gender-sensitive language at ASH.
Gender in research and teaching
Gender plays a major role in teaching and research at ASH Berlin, but also beyond. Here you can find information on professorships with a gender focus at ASH and other Berlin universities, on current research projects and access to the mailing list Gender Research: Gender in Research and Teaching.
Educational program of the women* representatives
Each semester, the Women* and Gender Equality Officers develop an educational program to promote gender equity, which has three areas:
- Teaching gender content and gender competencies - for everyone.
- Teaching key competencies - for women*
- Empowerment workshops - for specific groups of people who are marginalized in terms of gender, among other things.
Events are open to ASH members of all membership groups. Some events will take place digitally, others are planned in presence at Alice Salomon University.
Newsletter of the Women* and Equality Office
Via the e-mail mailing list of the Women* and Equality Office you will receive our monthly newsletter and thus exciting information about gender and equality policy events, job offers or initiatives.
Bookshelves
For students with different limitations, carrying books around during their studies can be a big burden. Therefore, the Women's* Representative allocates some book trays e.g. for pregnant women, people who rely on a wheelchair or others who can be relieved by an additional storage place.
The 24 book bins in Student Room 119 are assigned for one semester at a time and can be renewed if needed.
If you would like to use a book locker, please contact us by email with a brief justification at. frauenbeauftragte@ ash-berlin.eu.
Quer - The Gender Magazine of ASH Berlin
The magazine Quer! was published from 2000 to 2018 and was edited by the women's* representatives. It offers a look at current debates around gender and feminism from different perspectives.
The magazine is available online in pdf format. Print issues can be viewed at the Women*'s Office. Some issues are also available there to take home.
