This second semester course will examine several social work theories which are relevant for good practice in the modern social work arena. Theories will include the strengths perspective, critical social work, task-centered social work, and person-centered social work. We will also revisit theories from the first semester, including the general practice model and the systemic approach, which we will look at more extensively. A section of the course will be devoted to examining theories regarding methods for social change and will discuss how we can best utilize them in our practice. Students will be encouraged to look at each theory critically. Where are their strengths and their weaknesses? Can a theory be tailored for your individual practice? If so, how? This course is part of the International Curriculum. The language of instruction (which includes reading texts) is English. We will continue to work with the small group work format. Student presentations on relevant, but self-selected topics will also be integrated. Students will be expected to attend class, complete the weekly reading assignments and participate in the class discussions and small group work. |
