What is gender, and what is queer? More importantly, what do these concepts do? How do norms of gender and sexuality manifest themselves and how do they impact social, economic, and political life? This course will provide an introduction to an intersectional understanding of gender and queer studies; in this seminar we will examine the ways in which gender and sexuality are bound with race and class. In addition, we will examine how the key concept of ‘queer' as an identity category, a methodology, a mode of politics as well as a discipline which is constantly developing. We will also learn to use gendered and queer analyses as practical tools to examine other aspects of social life, especially focusing on social inequality. We will read theoretical and academic texts and use these critical reading skills to examine other "texts" that are common in our daily and professional lives: newspaper reports, films, demonstrations, government publications and laws, and interventions of non-governmental actors. Students are expected to read 20-30 pages a week. The language of instruction and discussion is English. Most of the texts will be in English, although some will be in German. A „Scheinerwerb" will be possible by either presenting the readings for a seminar (Referat) or writing an paper (Hausarbeit). |
