This seminar provides an opportunity to understand the foundations of racism in relation to migration and to highlight the role of critical social work in this context (in English).
Main content:
- Fundamentals about racism, focus and reflections on critical social work.
- racism and culturalization in social work: Work with Refugees and Migrants: orientalist discourses in social work.
- case studies from the practice of social work, focusing on racism.
- racism in education systems: Focus on the german education system and relevant education systems to the students (since the seminar has international students).
Although the focus will be on Germany, there will be space for sharing your experiences in other contexts.
The language of the Seminars is mainly English. At the same time, different languages are also always welcome in the discussions, and we can together make a concerted effort to find translations and ways of communicating.
Attendance paper/Teilnahme Leistung: (for students, who do not have/do not want to take an exam in this seminar): Please choose three texts that have been discussed in the seminar and work on them (reflection and scientifically). (3-6 pages for the 3 texts together).
Exam/Prüfungsleistung: The exams are possible as one of the following choices:
- Presentation with written reflection: Present a topic to the seminar group. (alone approx. 30 minutes, in pairs approx. 60 minutes).
Here you can, for example, deepen a topic that was discussed in the seminar a new aspect, or illuminate a different perspective, deal with current discourses, or pursue a question of your own. After the seminar please hand in a paper of 3- 5 pages.
- Hausarbeit (written paper): Write up your own paper in 10- 15 pages.
- Design of a seminar unit including written reflection. Afterwards please hand in an elaboration of 3-5 pages
