The course will help you
- Trace and discuss the origin of Racism
- Identify and analyze the different forms of Racism by the White[1] Subject
- Identify and analyze factors and features related to Racism and Migration and how they are implicated in our actions.
- Make you understand that with Racism’s epistemology till date and the present world system, the dominant White person is a potential racist
- Make affected racialized Communities understand how Racism works on them
- Understand that Racism is systemic and not just individual (single perpetrators)
- Confront the system and not just trying to become allies to the “affected minorities”.
In the seminars, we will start with a historical perspective by tracing the origins of racism. We will examine it in the context of global migration movements in the past and present to then go on to look at specific forms of racism (anti-muslim racism, anti-black racism, anti-semitism,…). We will reflect upon the intersections of racism with other forms of discrimination and touch on issues surrounding Post- and Decolonial Theory, Critical Race Theory and Black Feminist Thought. In the second half of the semester we will place our focus on theory and practice of self-organised resistance movements ranging from anti-colonial struggles to anti-racist movements today.
A general focus will be on knowledge production and transfer. We will look at how knowledge production and the transfer can be means of exercising power on the one hand, but also an empowerment instrument on the other. The question of how knowledge is categorised and legitimised plays a central role. At the same time, we want to deal with our own knowledge: what do we know and what don’t we know and how narrated in social work and inter-relational power dynamics? And why is that?
The seminar will mainly take place synchronously unless the present COVID-19 pandemic rules change in the near future.
Attendance is expected. For a participation achievement, 70% of the texts must be read and the corresponding assignments must be completed and submitted
