In this seminar, we will critically engage with 'security', that allows the mass incarceration of human beings by the imagination of a risk immunization and withdraws us from building safety based on the lived experiences and knowledge of survivors of violence. Carceral based solutions often fail, exclude vulnerable people, generate secondary traumatization by failing support or further discrimination and dehumanize. Asking, what would make us safer, we will learn about account-ability and response-ability by community accountability / transformative justice experiences and concepts. As these stem from the work and experiences of Women* of Color in the US, we will critically translate them to our contexts and combine them with critical prison studies to engage locally. Since the hegemonic imagination of prisons in Germany is preventing effective critical interest in what is happening beyond the walls, we will also investigate around events such as the current suicides in Berlin prisons, connect with ex-/ incarcerated people and Convict Criminology, learn to dismantle stereotypical narratives / representations and network with activists from various backgrounds. Linking intersectional perspectives, we will analyze various Cultures of Confinement and their function in our current time with a focus on Germany to network, nurture dialogue and praxis that enables harm reduction. Oktober, the 13th will be the first session, where we will discuss seminar content, goals and agreements to ensure them. Please note, that this will be the last seminar I can teach in academia. Due to the massive lack of critical academic and activist engagement with prisons, I kindly ask you to register only, if you'll actively participate, be present to the dates and willing to give marginalized voices and prison abolitionist perspectives space. People who are not studying at ASH, but wish to participate/are interested in the given topics, intersections, and reflective space, please contact me via email to enhance networking and accessibility. People with previous/current experience in prisons as well as camps (detention centers, NUK etc.) and survivors of gendered violence are very welcome, please inform me to organize translation or further barrier reduction, if needed. Notice that the seminar will most likely take place in a space in Neukölln/Kreuzberg. For attendance, you have to write a structured text/event summary, further credits can be acquired by actively taking part in the organization of the concluding public event.
