„Where do you really come from?” The seminar Racism and Migration will examine the power relations that grant certain groups the privilege of posing this question to others. The course offers an understanding of how and by whom ”others” are created in a world marked by migration and mobility.
Following an introduction to postcolonial theory (mandatory reading includes Stuart Hall and Gayatri C. Spivak, among others), the seminar seeks to integrate the diverse backgrounds of the students to learn about the ways in which people can become those others in their various cultural and national contexts.
The course includes a field trip to Berlin-based artist Isaiah Lopaz. His work provides a starting point for understanding ways of dealing with racism, including empowerment and anti-racism work. A main focus of this seminar will be different strategies of dealing with various forms of othering in global migration contexts.
A proficient level of English is required.
