In this introduction to Gender and Queer Studies you will learn about basic concepts, e.g. the distinction of sex and gender, doing gender, performance and performativity, queering desire, and heteronormativity. A particular focus will be on relations of power and domination and how they intertwine in complex ways: This means, for example, that we cannot talk about sexism, without considering racializations of sexuality, nor talk about gender norms or homophobia without acknowledging the role of e.g. religion, class, globalized economic relations and ableism. There will be reading material for each session. It ranges from academic texts, activist’s publications to public and media discourse, including audio-visual material. You are expected to prepare a seminar presentation (various formats; preferably in groups) plus a short written summary and reflection, or a longer written essay. |
