Gruppe 8
Images of and filming in urban spaces
A practical and theoretical approach to filmmaking in the metropolis
In the seminar we will start by watching two iconic city films as „Metropolis” (1927) by Fritz Lang and „Man with a movie camera” (1929) by Dziga Vertov. We will then decide which films we want to watch and analyse together – also to review the history of (documentary) filmmaking in urban spaces. We will also visit the exhibition "The Art of Society" in the New National Gallery.
In the first term you will also learn how to use a video camera and how to edit footage. In groups you will explore the city and focus on one subject – as an ethnographic participant researcher. The 5-10 min trailers of this small research project will be presented and discussed in class. In the first term we will also visit the team of Campus Transferale at Kastanienboulevard and the station of urban cultures. Within the frame of this new project we will organize a public screening and disucssion of a film on contested urban spaces at the end of the term.
In the second term you will conceptuatlize and realize your own film project, either fictive or documentary (or cross over). In a group you will write a script, film and edit the video. The films will then be in a (cinema) place in the inner city at the end oft he second term. |
