Overview of modules

A large part of the course is completed via 17 online modules, which are offered to students one after the other via the learning platform “openOLAT” (Online Learning And Training) learning platform. Within the online module courses, you will find all the information and tools you need to study and successfully complete the respective module. Teaching units are supplemented by interactive elements (such as forums, video chats or virtual small group work), which enable intensive communication between students and lecturers. The examination generally consists of several subtasks and is usually completed in stages. You will receive detailed feedback from the respective lecturers of the module.

You will receive an introduction to the OLAT learning platform at the beginning of your studies during the introductory days. No prior knowledge is required.

There is one attendance module with ten attendance days per semester. These are approximately once a month, on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at ASH Berlin.

The attendance modules primarily teach communication and methodological skills in social work that cannot be learned and practiced through self-study in the online modules. They also form the framework for the project work.

In addition, all students must take part in a total of eight selected practical courses (Friday/Saturday) over the course of the 8 semesters. We recommend attending one practical course per semester.

The degree program includes two practical professional studies (BPS), which must be completed in order to obtain state recognition. These consist of two phases:

  • The first phase of the professional practice studies (BPS I) is made up of the professional activity in social work accompanying the course, which must be proven at each semester. The work placement must meet the requirements for a practice placement in accordance with the Social Professions Recognition Act (SozBAG), i.e. evidence must be provided of professional supervision by a state-recognized social worker in accordance with Section 10 (2) SozBAG. Students should use the form provided for this purpose to provide proof of professional experience and professional supervision.
In addition, students must take part in a total of 8 selected practical courses (Friday/Saturday) during the course of their studies. We recommend attending one course each semester. Various courses on different topics are offered each semester.
  • The second phase of the practical studies (BPS II) consists of two projects: The theory project in the 3rd and 4th semester and the practical project in the 7th and 8th semester.
The subject of the theory project is a self-chosen question from professional practice, which is worked on with the help of scientific theories.
The practical project involves designing, implementing and evaluating a change project in the context of your own social work activities.

The course concludes with the completion of the thesis and an accompanying colloquium.
