Information on the Erasmus+ program for internships in Europe

Under the motto "Enriching lives, opening minds", Erasmus+ strengthens Europe-wide cooperation in all areas of education. Erasmus+ also supports internships for students in a host institution in another European country (excluding EU institutions or institutions that manage EU programs as well as diplomatic representations of the students' countries of origin). Students can gain work experience in an international environment. In addition, they can expand their key qualifications such as communication and cooperation skills, openness and knowledge of other cultures and markets. Students can receive funding for a compulsory internship or a voluntary internship of between two and twelve months.

ASH Berlin has been participating in the Erasmus+ program since 1988. The new Erasmus program generation Erasmus+ (2021-27) will start at the beginning of the winter semester 2022/23. In spring 2021, ASH Berlin was awarded the European Charter for Higher Education (ECHE), which entitles it to participate in the current generation. The Erasmus Policy Statement describes ASH Berlin's strategy, goals and priorities for its Erasmus activities within the framework of the European Union's Erasmus+ education program for the period 2021-2027.

Erasmus+ - Services

  • EU internship contract between university, company and student + Support during the internship by a contact person at the home university and at the company
  • Recognition of work completed abroad
  • Monthly allowance of up to 600 euros per month
  • Additional financial support for students with so-called fewer opportunities ("lessopportunities", e.g. students with child(ren), chronic illnesses or disabilities, working students or students who are first-time graduates )
  • additional financial support for sustainable travel to and from the place of study ("green travel")
  • The Erasmus Student Charter provides information on the rights and obligations of students with regard to the recognition of credits earned abroad.

Amount of the mobility grant The mobility grant is intended to compensate for the increased cost of living in the host country. The amount of the Erasmus+ mobility grant is based on country groups defined by the DAAD. The calculation is based on the average cost of living in the host country. The monthly installments are recalculated each year on the basis of the current funding amount and may therefore differ from the previous year.

  • 750 € / month for country group 1 : Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden (and the United Kingdom, see below for more information)
  • 690 € / month for country group 2: Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus
  • 630 € / month for country group 3: Bulgaria, Estonia, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Turkey, Hungary

Students can apply for additional funding for sustainable travel to and from the internship location ("green travel"). Sustainable travel includes travel by train, bus, carpool, bicycle or on foot and the majority of the journey (i.e. more than 50%) must be made in this way.

A one-off grant of EUR 50 can be applied for "Green Travel". There is also the possibility of funding for up to 4 additional travel days if your travel time is extended due to the sustainable means of transport. You can apply for 1 additional day per journey from 4 hours travel time and 2 additional days from 8 hours travel time. You enter the number of additional travel days required directly in the relevant form when applying.

How do I apply for the grant ? After a successful application for the Erasmus internship scholarship, the application for a "green travel" grant is part of the regular scholarship award process. Important: when applying for this grant, you undertake to keep the original proof of sustainable travel to and from the internship for 5 years and to submit it to the International Office of ASH Berlin for review upon request!

For students with so-called fewer opportunities, it is possible to apply for additional financial support ("Social Top Up") of EUR 250 per month. Participants with fewer opportunities are:

  • Students with a disability
    • from GdB 20
    • If you have a proven disability that requires additional financial support but do not have a disability card, please contact us at auslandspraktikum@ash-berlin.eu.
  • Students with a chronic illness
    • Chronic illness that leads to additional financial needs abroad
  • Students with child(ren) who bring at least one child along to their stay abroad
    • At least one child must be taken along during the entire stay abroad. The amount of the grant is independent of the number of children.
  • Students from a non-academic family/household
    • Neither parent or caregiver has an academic degree (i.e. neither parent may have a degree from an FH/TH or university or a vocational academy. This also includes foreign degrees, regardless of whether they are recognized in Germany or not).In the case of single parents, this regulation only applies to the parent with whom the child lives or grew up .
  • Working students
    • The gainful employment must have been exercised continuously for at least 6 months in a period of 9 months prior to departure.
    • During the minimum period of employment prior to application, the monthly income must be above EUR 450 and below EUR 850 (net earnings from all activities per month added together).
    • The activity is not continued during the stay abroad. Termination is not a prerequisite; the employment contract can also be paused.
    • As a rule, self-employed activities and dual/part-time courses of study with a fixed salary are excluded.

How do I apply for the grant? After a successful application for the Erasmus internship grant, the application for a "social top up" is part of the regular scholarship awarding process. Important: When applying for this grant, you undertake - depending on the type of grant - to submit relevant evidence to the International Office of ASH Berlin for review either directly when submitting the application or for up to 5 years upon request.

The length of stay and funding period may differ.

A mobility grant can only be paid if you have completed your Erasmus stay for a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 months. If you terminate your stay and fall short of the minimum duration, you must repay any mobility grant already paid out.

Unfortunately, Erasmus+ scholarships cannot be awarded for internships in Switzerland. However, internships in Switzerland are generally remunerated. In addition, students who would like to complete an internship in Switzerland can apply for a PROMOS scholarship.

Further information on the program can be found on the DAAD website. Practical information on Erasmus+ stays abroad can be found here.

Erasmus+ scholarships for stays in the United Kingdom (UK)

Even though the United Kingdom (UK) is no longer a direct Erasmus+ program country since Brexit, a limited number of Erasmus+ scholarships can still be awarded for internships there ("International Dimension"). The funding rates for country group 1 are paid (for more information on funding rates and country groups, see above). Please note: students must apply for a visa for internships in the UK. Internships in the UK can only be funded if the host institution itself has a license to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship.

If students do not receive an Erasmus+ scholarship, it is possible to apply for a PROMOS scholarship.

Additional information from the DAAD

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the national Erasmus+ agency in Germany. The DAAD also offers an information platform with experience reports, online training, tips and links for preparing for studies and internships in other European countries.
