In the summer semester of 2024, the three Berlin SAGE universities Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin (ASH Berlin), Evangelische Hochschule Berlin (EHB) and Katholische Hochschule für Sozialwesen Berlin (KHSB) are hosting a lecture series on the topic of "Anti-Semitism - challenges and opportunities for action in the social, educational and healthcare sectors" . As a result of the terrorist attack and massacre by the terrorist organization Hamas on 7 October 2023 and the resulting war, there has been an increase in anti-Semitic incidents and crimes worldwide.
Against this backdrop, the three Berlin universities have designed a hybrid lecture series that takes a (self-)critical look at anti-Semitism in the social, educational and healthcare sectors. On six dates, experts from the SAGE disciplines (social work, health & care, education & training) will shed light on anti-Semitism in discrimination research, in daycare centers and in the professional field of social work, among others.
The final event is planned for July 10, 2024 and will be organized by the university management of the SAGE universities and Prof. Dr. Samuel Salzborn, contact person of the state of Berlin on anti-Semitism, at the Catholic University of Applied Social Sciences Berlin. The series of events is supported by the Berlin Partner network as part of the Berlin against anti-Semitism campaign.
Prof. Dr. Bettina Völter, Rector of ASH Berlin, emphasizes: "With the lecture series, we want to help students, teachers and interested parties of the SAGE subjects develop a differentiated awareness and attitude towards anti-Semitism, detect anti-Semitism in their own profession and discipline and analyse it from an anti-Semitism-critical and intersectional perspective. Neither anti-Semitism nor anti-Muslim or any other form of racism has a place at universities."
Prof. Dr. Sebastian Schröer-Werner, President of EHB, says: "In view of the challenges facing society, it is our responsibility to raise awareness of anti-Semitism in social work, health, education and training courses. Developing a clear stance against all forms of anti-Semitism and racism is crucial for students and teachers in our socially relevant subjects. This lecture series enables us to present the results of previous research and to develop strategies to address this issue professionally."
Prof. Dr. Gabriele Kuhn-Zuber, President of the KHSB, emphasizes: "Anti-Semitism destroys the foundations of a society based on solidarity, which our students, graduates and all people who work in social professions stand up for. The lecture series aims to raise awareness of anti-Semitic statements and actions and teach skills on how to counter them with arguments. We see this as a step towards fulfilling our social mission to advocate for a diverse and non-discriminatory community."

The Berlin SAGE universities
The three universities ASH Berlin, EHB and KHSB are united by the fact that they qualify people for careers in the fields of social work, health, education and training - in short: SAGE. They therefore have a special social responsibility both now and in the future. In 2019, the three universities joined forces to form the SAGE network in the state of Berlin. In this association, ASH Berlin, EHB and KHSB jointly fulfill their public welfare-oriented mission in the political and academic location of Berlin.
The Berlin against anti-Semitism campaign
Together with Berlin's business, academic and political communities, the Berlin Partner Network launched the "Berlin against anti-Semitism" initiative at the beginning of 2021 to show that hatred and hate speech have no place in a diverse, cosmopolitan and tolerant city like Berlin. As part of the initiative, both sustainable, internal company measures and high-profile campaigns are being implemented to raise awareness of the issue of anti-Semitism among employees, organizations and society as a whole. The three Berlin SAGE universities have supported the campaign since its launch.
