An event organized by the Landesmusikakademie Berlin in cooperation with the Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin, the Landesmusikrat Berlin and the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.
For the first time, a symposium on community music will take place at the Landesmusikakademie Berlin on September 19, 2024. The one-day event will offer a variety of opportunities to get to know the field of community music and to network.
Community music creates low-threshold access for making music together, builds communities and is inclusive in the broadest sense. It encourages, enables and empowers participants to play music according to their own ideas and wishes. What community music means for the individual players, what is currently happening in the field in Berlin and beyond, and how community music can be used in a variety of ways - these are the central topics of the symposium.
- Date: Thursday, September 19, 2024, 10 am - 5 pm.
- Location: Landesmusikakademie Berlin, Straße zum FEZ 2, 12459 Berlin

The day will begin with a lecture by Prof. Dr. Elke Josties (Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin) on the current state of community music. This will be followed by further impulses and the presentation of projects from Berlin and beyond. Workshops offer the opportunity to get to know practical approaches and methods of community music. An essential component is the opportunity to network. A discussion on the professional field of community music with key voices from Berlin will take place at the end of the symposium.
Prof. Dr. Elke Josties (Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin) emphasizes the social significance: "Community music has often been linked to social movements from the very beginning, since its origins in England and the USA. It promotes collaborative, open-minded music-making and social encounters in self-organized music initiatives in neighbourhoods or various civic organizations, in inclusive projects of encounter, in intergenerational work or transcultural work with people with a history of flight. Community Music encourages actors in music education in the context of daycare centers, schools, music schools, cultural education and social work to develop new creative forms of cooperation."
Target groups:
The conference is aimed at music and social pedagogues, social workers, educators, teachers from general education schools, teachers from music schools, musicians, representatives of institutions, students and anyone interested in the topic of community music.
