The exhibition "40 Years of SEKIS - An Idea in Motion" sheds light on the history of the Berlin self-help contact and information center SEKIS. Founded in 1983 to support self-help groups, SEKIS Berlin has made important contributions to health democracy.
The essence of self-help is community. In a self-help group, social, psychological and/or illness-related burdens can be dealt with more easily. From the very beginning, self-help was a grassroots democratic, participatory method in which those affected developed collective solutions and put their issues on the political agenda.
Through self-help markets and other events, SEKIS Berlin has increased the visibility of the initiatives' issues and requests for change. The founding of the PflegeEngagement contact points in 2010 was another milestone.
Self-help continues to be an important part of a vibrant democracy and stands for plurality and diversity - different perspectives are respected and enrich the community. In today's times, we need this more than ever!
The exhibition will hang in front of the Audimax until 05.01.2025.
Almost five years ago, the Rector of Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin, Prof. Dr. Bettina Völter, and Ella Wassink, Project Manager of SEKIS Berlin and Managing Director of Selko e.V., signed a cooperation agreement. The partnership aims to sensitize ASH students in health professions to the aspect of self-help as an essential support for people with illnesses and disabilities. Since 2019, self-help activists and professionals have regularly presented their field of work in courses at the university and research projects and student projects on the topic of self-help have also been carried out. ASH Berlin can therefore rightly call itself the first self-help-friendly university in Germany.
